Kawaguchiko




Rented e-bikes and rode around Lake Kawaguchiko near Mt. Fuji. It was a perfect weather day (sunny and in the upper 60s), but the clouds did cover the top of Fuji. Oh well, I loved the ride, e-bikes are the WAY TO GO, and the fall vides were everywhere!


                     I have got to get a new helmet. I honestly think this one is 30 years old!

                        Got my favorite food - Hiroshima style Okonomiyaki - so good!




Notice the tiny drummer. He was so cute and did all the moves. You can't see the rest of the group in this pic, but they are also scrunched down behind their drums. He beat the drum in almost perfect timing and tried so hard to follow all the moves the group did. Startin young! 



We were a few weeks early. This is a row of maple trees that will turn bright red soon. They have lights set up all along this canal and its very popular at night, especially once the leaves go red. Oh well, it was still nice.











                                The bike was a bit too small for Kimball.

Mitchells visit Japan Oct 2024

 The last half of October we were so happy to have the Mitchell family come to Japan for a visit. We started our adventures in Tokyo. Mitchells arrived from Korea (the first leg of their trip) at 2am on a Sunday. It just so happened that week was our Stake Conference, which is held in the Temple Annex, so we all stayed at Hardy Barracks in downtown Tokyo for a couple of nights. Our Tokyo activities included a visit to the Taiko Drum Museum, the Ninja and Samurai Museum, Senso-ji Temple, TeamLabs, Trick Art Muesum, an Owl Cafe, Meiji Jingu, and Shibuya!    After Tokyo we came back to Camp Zama and took a few day trips - Hakone (including a swimming suit hot springs), Disney Sea, Miyagase Dam (where we did Indigo dying), and Showa Park (where we rented tandem bikes). Plus lots of fun times just hangin out (including a trip to Zama Costco)! The next week we planned a road trip to Matsumoto and Kamikochi. It was fun to stay at a Japanese ryokan! Thanksgiving in Kyushu (2nd time)

  Two years ago, in 2022, we spent the Thanksgiving holiday in Kyushu visiting Fukuoka, Sasebo, and Nagasaki. We really liked Kyushu so this Thanksgiving we decided to visit again. This time we went to Kagoshima, Kumamoto, Takachiho, Miyazaki, and Nichinan.  Our route made a big loop around the southern parts of Kyushu, starting and ending at Sakarajima! We flew to Kagoshima, arriving late in the afternoon, but hoping to get a sunset view of Sakarajima which was right across the bay from our hotel, the Kagoshima Sheraton. Unfortunately, we ended up spending a ton of time at the rental car office trying to explain that we had a SOFA drivers license rather than an international drivers license. By the time we got it all worked out (with the help of no less than 5 employees at the rental car office), it was late and we were exhausted. Himeji and Shikoku - Castles and Gardens and Gorges

 Spring time in Japan is glorious (unless you have allergies). We planned to visit Himeji Castle and Shikoku in December 2024, but our Christmas plans changed so we moved this trip to April. It was perfect timing with the Sakura season!! But poor Kimball SUFFERED terribly throughout the trip due to his allergies to Cyprus and Cedar. So take all these beautiful pictures with a grain of salt, knowing it was just about killing Kimball to be outside, all day, everyday! We had a grand plan to use almost every kind of transportation available - Shinkansen, regular trains, buses, rental car, boats, and airplanes. Amazingly all the plans and reservations worked out without a hitch.  We started off taking the Shinkansen to Hamamatsu to visit the famous garden there. It was the high seasons for tulips AND sakura. The garden was absolutely beautiful! (side note - Kimball took this pic of Mt. Fuji from the Shinkansen window. Its crazy that we are going so fast yet the picture turns out!) ...
