Celebrating 37th Anniversary in Tokyo
We saw one group who had the typical "lightweight" tent set up and a police office went over and asked them to take it down. I guess tents are not allowed at this park (but I see them at all the other parks??)
While strolling through the park we came upon a food truck selling chicken kabobs and super long French fries. The food looked and smelled so delicious we couldn't pass it up. It was interesting to order - the people running the food truck were not Japanese, but spoke some Japanese. One of them said he was from Turkey the other was from Iran. We ending up using English and some Japanese to communicate. (btw, the food was as good as it smelled)
We nexted walk through the grounds of the Emperor's Shrine, Meiji Jingu. The grounds were lovely and so peaceful. Dad did the traditional throwing in of money, bow, clap, bow.
Our next stop was to Tokyo Tower. It was a great view and so crazy to see the city just go on and on and on in every direction! Tokyo is HUGE. I tried to stand on the glass floor, but I could not make myself do it. I could only put one foot on it.
Just a funny side note - I was dying for a cold drink and they had a refreshment place in the Tower. What I wanted was a soda float. But, they didn't really offer that and unlike the US, it is very uncommon and even sometimes unacceptable to ask for an item to be made to order. If it's on the menu you can order it, if not, sorry. I tried to have dad tell them what I wanted but I guess there was something lost in the process. They nicely agreed to help the crazy American out and I got a glass of soda (with a ton of ice in it) and then the "Milky Soft Cream" on top. It was good, but with all the ice it just doesn't work the same!
Our final stop was to check out Korea town. That place was hoppin. It was a Saturday night so maybe that's when it gets busy, but the sidewalks had so many people walking on them that you had to "jump in" and keep walking until you "jumped out" at your store or restaurant.
Dad was able to pick a place in a relatively short amount of time (miracle). He was dying to try Korean BBQ Pork. I got Korean sushi. It was great but my favorite part was the tiny side dishes they served us at the beginning of the meal, almost like condiments. Unfortunately I ate most of them before we took the picture. The best one was lotus root!
Very fun day to celebrate 37 year together. Dad asked me if I ever imagined myself living in Japan and I have to say I did not really ever think it would happen. Yet here we are and I find myself liking so much of it!
